A good friend of ours once stated that the video library at the CalArts Butler Building in the 00’s and 10’s housed three categories of content: Really good, really bad, and really weird. I believe that the best films to come out of that time and space were influenced by all three categories, and one of the most sterling examples can be found in Brad Schaffer’s “Thumb Snatchers from the Moon Cocoon.” Not only is this a great film with some of the most fantastic alien gore effects ever committed to stop motion, but it’s a perfect time capsule of the strange smells, feelings, and flavors that defined the Butler Building (our lonely stop motion paradise) during that time. Brad recently won an Emmy for his work on Robot Chicken at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.
